Looks like there's going to be a documentary on Amazon about the King Of the Hammers contest

“Randy and I were mixing it up, going back and forth, you probably saw the one at the bottom of Backdoor that happened and then we went back and forth on Outer Limits. It’s easy to reel someone in in the rocks because you’re hunting. He (Randy) got up behind us on Spooners and we let him go and then we passed him, but that’s racing and we had fun and it was clean. Then he drove over our car and I was like, ‘It’s on brother, it’s on.”

And it was. With Scherer just in the lead as the finish lined loomed four or five miles ahead and the pair drag-racing across the flat, hard surface of Melville Dry Lake, Slawson’s car suddenly lost its transmission and coasted to a stop. Scherer took the checkered flag. Slawson was listed as a DNF.

Six former Kings took the start line in 2018 and all but Randy Slawson finished the race.
 All the other Kings finished in the top 10, proving that experience is key at the Hammers: Jason Scherer (1st); Erik Miller (2nd); Shannon Campbell (6th), Loren Healy (7th).

With the exception of JR Reynolds, who won the first Hammers in 2007, all former Kings raced in 2018.

All who competed on Friday now have two wins, except Shannon Campbell who has three.

Congratulations to the Campbell family, and compliments to Nitto tires (not only have they dominated drifting, but Nitto just swept the podium at King of the Hammers)

Nitto went from presenting sponsor in 2014, to title sponsor in 2015, and now it's found 1st, 2nd and 3rd place all using Nitto tires, and 4th place was the 2016 winner, also on Nitto tires

This victory makes Shannon Campbell the first three-time winner of the race and is the first time a tire manufacturer has swept the podium in the race’s 10-year history.

It's got to be particularly celebratory at the Campbell home, his son Wayland took 2nd place, just 28 seconds behind his fathers pace.

It's not a race that is easy on parts

Shannon finished the King of the Hammers on three tires in 6 hours 46 minutes and 4 seconds.

only 50 of the 122 racers made it to the finish line in the 14 hours allowed

Race rules dictate that cars can only be repaired by pit crews in the pit. All on-course repairs have to be made by the driver or co-driver, which sometimes necessitates extreme measures. This also takes drivers for hire out of the contention, and puts builders of the beasts in a better position to win, they know their machine. Drivers, pretty faces, and blank check racers? Not going to be able to fix the broken stuff to keep themselves in the race



the racing is done in the first 5 and a 1/2 minutes, the rest is just podium
