the red boilered M-50a 4-8-2 #4055, the red paint was applied for special UN delegates train, that was run from Chicago to the freedom conference at San Francisco via the Rock Island and the Southern Pacific.
The probably only existing color photo of the red boilered M-50a 4-8-2 #4055 was taken by Milo Schalla in Silvis Yard somewhen between April and early summer 1945, when the coalburning 4055 wore its red dress along with its oilburning sister 4047 (see the comment below). The red paint was applied for special UN delegates train, that was run from Chicago to the freedom conference at San Francisco via the Rock Island and the Southern Pacific. The coalburning 4055 pulled it from Chicago to Kansas City, where the oilburning 4047 took over to the handover to the SP at Tucumcari. We will probably never find out why the RI chose to paint these two locomotives for that special run, but what we know is that after a few months, it was back to black again.
