  1. That is a Cessna 140 .. they can be had for around 35-40K $ That is about the same price as an average new car today.. The upkeep and storage and insurance are a little worse than a car, but certainly affordable to young folks who have good paying jobs. I learned to fly (around 1963) in a Cessna 120 which was an older model of the same basic airplane.. Late 1940's -1950's. model that has a useful cruising speed of about 100 miles per hour. The engine is an air cooled 4 cylinder of around 85 horsepower. Ya have to be passionate to be able to do it today, but affordable in the same way that hot rodding and racing are today..

    1. it's the FAA maintenance that I'm pretty sure makes it unaffordable to anyone under 6 figure income. When rent in San Diego, and probably most other cities, is 1600 for a CHEAP one bedroom, that's 19,200 a year of income blown on rent. That's half the income of a person making 20 an hour. So, barely affordable for anyone who has to drive a car to work, like most people do, and car insurance is about 2500 a year, gas is about 2500 a year (50 a week) and car payments for anyone who bought a cheap new car - about 5k a year, so the cost of a car not including maintenance like tires, 10k for a car they make payments on, 5k for a car that's paid for. So, car plus rent, 30k. Food, about 300 to 400 a month, is roughly 4 to 5k a year. Cell phone, about 1k a year. Now life is costing about 35k, and hopefully the hypothetical person is making 25 an hour if they are lucky. If my math is right, someone making 25 an hour is tapped out from bills.
So, to make over 25 an hour, so they can afford some fun life stuff, like a fun 2 second car, hot rod, or airplane, that's got to be less than 1/2 the population. Just my guess.
And a pilots license training, must be around 10 to 15k, airport fee for parking a plane outdoors, 10k a year I guess and double that to rent a hanger. Plus 6 bucks a gallon av gas, insurance on a plane, and I'm thinking a person has to make about 50 an hour to afford a plane, and ordinary living. So, that's where I was coming from asking in the title, how do young people afford these?
