on this day in 1825, George Stephenson’s steam-powered Locomotion No. 1 travelled 26 miles between Shildon, Darlington and Stockton, carrying hundreds of passengers to great fanfare. It set in motion a train of events that changed the world forever.

It is believed that Locomotion No. 1 was the first locomotive to make use of coupling rods to link together its driving wheels, reducing the chance of the wheels slipping on the iron rails.

Thousands gathered to see a replica steam engine embark on a three-day journey to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway

  1. Great information! The first picture has to be one when the locomotion was run for an historical run because in 1825 there was no photography. 1829 was the first official photograph which was not a success, and then in 1831 the glass plate with silver-based coating was introduced. Wouldn't we all like to ride even on the replica!
