Hardest working skater there ever was, Jesse Arrowood, a land scaping skater from Santa Cruz. Respect! The 1st comment I see under the video, is a local bar owner, telling this guy, free beer for all the work!

With only 21,000 subscribers, his video still reached and was watched by 152 thousand viewers!

His efforts, like this video, to clean up a skating area, are in a series of videos he is calling Scape and Destroy

This video is off the 101 in Morgan Hill, South East of San Jose

Tony Hawk Recreates 'Central Park Mystery Skater' Photo From 1965, after some pretty impressive work to investigate this mysterious, dapper skateboarder from the mid-60s,

While the "mystery skater" still technically remains a mystery, everything that has sprouted since the investigation—and really, since 1965 when the original photo was shot—has been so rad. It brought the skateboarding community (and beyond) together in such a cool, unique way.

I posted about the photographer and his 1965 New York Central Park skateboard montage a decade ago  https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-invention-of-skateboard.html

REM, a handheld "power stick" that works completely independent of the user's skateboard, might be a good alternative to electric skateboards

Currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign, REM is being developed by Barcelona-based startup Limitless Propulsions.

The setup has a top speed of 25 mph along with a complete lack of brakes – the onus is upon users to stop themselves as they normally would, without a motor.

Power is provided by a 44.4V lithium battery which is claimed to be good for a range of about 12 miles per charge.

Of course, if the battery runs out, the skateboard can still be used on its own. In fact, one of the big selling points of REM is the fact that it leaves the user's board light, sleek and unaltered, instead of being weighed down and cluttered with a motor and battery.

A Santa Cruz woman has been skateboarding for more than 50 years. Now, Judi Oyama is headed to the World Skate Games in Rome

Oyama just qualified for the World Skate Games in Rome next year, where she will be a member of the U.S. Slalom team.

“I was super, I guess surprised and excited,” she said.

Oyama is ranked second in the world in women’s slalom.

Oyama started skateboarding in her driveway when she was 13. And she admits in the '70s, she hit some bumps in the road. She was sometimes the only woman competing and was even shut out of competitions completely.

I don't understand how this could be effective, but, whatever... A group of women skateboarders in Bolivia has been using Indigenous attire to help battle discrimination. (By acclimating the perception of them to skateboarders? I don't get it)

Polleras are symbols of cultural identity in Bolivia’s countryside. The history of the voluminous, traditional skirts worn by Indigenous Aymara and Quechua women is complex: Dating to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, polleras were imposed by colonial rulers to reflect a style worn in Spain.

The skirts eventually were adopted as part of Andean attire, most commonly associated with cholitas—Indigenous women from the highlands. Polleras inspire cultural pride, but they’re also a reminder of rural oppression.

Now a group of women athletes in Bolivia has brought pollera fashion to the city, donning the skirts during skateboarding exhibitions to celebrate the heritage of cholitas and put a modern face on the ancestral garments.

“The pollera is associated with the countryside, with ignorant people without resources,” says Daniela Santiváñez, a co-founder of ImillaSkate, a skateboarding troupe that has made the skirts a centerpiece of its performances.

During the past three years, ImillaSkate has grown to nine skaters. Being an active member means weekly practice and shared respect for diversity and tradition.

The group is based in Cochabamba, but through social media it has garnered an audience well beyond Bolivia. ImillaSkate has more than 24,000 followers on Instagram, 8,000-plus followers on Facebook, and a YouTube channel where some of its videos get thousands of views. It also has a presence on TikTok, with about 4,500 followers.

Santiváñez notes that members wear polleras only for performances: “We do it as a demonstration, as a cry for inclusion.”

“We try to explain that this helps us understand our mothers, our aunts, and grandmothers,” Tacuri adds. For her, the stigma attached to polleras changed somewhat with the election of former president Evo Morales in 2006. Under Morales, Bolivia’s first Indigenous president, voters approved a new constitution that formally recognized 36 Indigenous languages and also empowered the nation’s Indigenous people with rights such as communal ownership of land.

Vista, which skaters claim put skateboarding on the map, by creating megaramps in Vista, and developing the best skaters in the world - has passed a zoning permit that will fine anyone with a backyard ramp over 6 ft tall

The City of Vista has unanimously passed a new ordinance to fine skaters $3,400 if they have a backyard ramp over 6 feet tall.

The fee is for a permit regulated by the city.

The ordinance was passed as residents complained of ramps making a lot of noise. Skating will also be only allowed from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

I see someone realizing that they can dig down into the backyard, and make a 20 foot tall ramp that only is 6 ft above ground.

Arguing for the new law and fine:

A married couple who said the tranquility at their Oak Drive home is disrupted by noise coming from a neighbor’s 30-foot skateboard ramp.

The husband called the ramp “absurdly large” and said it towers over his backyard, and his wife said there is a cheering section where spectators bang their boards in response to some skate tricks.

They also said they had asked their neighbor if they could have three evenings a week without anyone using the ramp, but he declined and said he was running a business teaching skateboard lessons.

And get this, the photo above? Is a backyard ramp. I shit you not.

The most renowned backyard skateboard ramp in Vista likely is Sloanyard at the home of professional skateboarder Elliot Sloan.

When you have an X Games competition in your backyard, with the audience cheering? I am certain the neighbors aren't going to be cool with the party sounds, music on the PA, etc.

Kurt Cobain owned a hand-painted skateboard that pays homage to Iron Maiden, that Tony Hawk now owns, and is going to do something newsworthy with, next Monday to raise awareness for emotional health, and to help provide resources for those who are struggling mentally.

Kurt Cobain was an avid painter, and one of his most notable works was a hand-painted Jeff Phillips model skateboard that pays homage to Iron Maiden. Sadly, Phillips, who was a skateboarder, died by suicide in 1993 just three months before the Nirvana frontman took his own life. Since Cobain's death, the board has been passed on to different owners, with the most recent being Tony Hawk. The legendary skateboarder bought the piece of art at auction last year and has some special plans for it. He teased that he'll be using it to raise awareness for emotional health, and is going to share more details on Monday (February 20), which would've been Cobain's 56th birthday.

"I bought this skateboard at an auction last year. It is an original Jeff Phillips model, hand painted by Kurt Cobain in 1985. Two icons that had immense influence on their respective fields, both of whom passed away tragically and much too young. I even tracked down the original owner to understand its provenance," Hawk wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the skateboard. "With the incomparable help of @dupedupe, we are hoping to make something good of this acquisition by raising awareness for emotional health, and to help provide resources for those who are struggling mentally. More to come on February 20 (Kurt’s birthday)."
