it's sad to see the racing stripe decal on a Mustang wasn't made well enough to stand up to the sun for only a couple decades. Maybe the people that made that decal, didn't realize that a car would be in the sun for decades,

or maybe they figured Mustangs would be wrecked long before the decals cracked

Racing stripes on the Valiant, and the burnout marks on the driveway... someone was full of oats at getting a V8 for the first time, that's my guess

factory optional racing stripes on a 2019 Mustang came in 3 price levels, $500, $1000, and $10,000. Gt 350 decal, Gt 500 decal, and Gt 500 hand painted then clear coated.

the optional painted-on racing stripes cost $10,000.

The GT500's optional stick-on vinyl stripes, which run $1,000.

On the GT350, those same vinyl stripes cost $495.

I think the Camaro and the Challenger nailed it for best design, and best variety. Vipers did really well too, but only for the modern cars.

Stripes

These days you see a lot of first generation Camaros with SS badges and two wide Z/28 stripes running atop their hood and decklid.
It’s a cool combination, but it’s a bit of restoration freehand.

 From 1967-1973 only Z/28s got those stripes, with the exception being the white and orange 1969 Indy 500 Pace Car replicas, which wore SS badges but got the Z/28 graphics.

Although 1970-1972 Chevelle SS models wore similar stripes as the Camaro Z/28, from 1967-1969 Camaro SS models had their own stripe packages and the 1970-1972 SS Camaros did not wear stripes.

Oscar Koveleski's Can Am car (the M8B McLaren) was criticized by the SCCA for it's paint scheme, as they had a rule limiting how much body space could be used for advertising.... he told them "it's just racing stripes"

When the SCCA looked at it, they saw a slot car track advertising "Auto World", his hobby store in Scranton PA, with the race car shop in the back.

He replied "That isn't advertising, that's racing stripes" and then he went back to racing.

This is the same guy who was 2nd in the Cannonball Run with the Chevy van loaded with 5 drums of 130 octane  racing gas

the Shell 4000 Cross Canada Rally in 1963, strangely, had a pair of Chrysler 300s in full rally race mode

The Shell 4000 was the worlds longest, most grueling rally in the 60's, and the only FIA sanctioned one in North America.

For the rally cars, Chrysler chose the 413 with 360 horsepower and a simple four barrel carb backed with the Torqueflite three speed automatic transmission. Both cars were two door hardtops and set up by Carl Prueths for rally racing with complete chassis protection using 3/4 inch welded steel plate on items deemed to be in danger including shock absorbers, engine oil pan, the K frame cradle, rear axle carrier and the leaf springs. A roof lamp was mounted providing high power wattage to light up the road ahead and help set up the car for turns. Even the tires and wheels were heavy duty. The 300 usually ran 14 inch rims with nice cushy road tires. These rally 300s came with 15 inch weld reinforced steel wheels with special 9.00x 15 inch Goodyear non expanding braced tread tires imported from Belgium.

The drivers were Gene Henderson with Fred Browne as navigator and the second car had Terry Sumner and Roger Bohl as navigator. Both cars were painted white with blue stripes in the center.

Starting in Vancouver, to Calgary, Regina, Winnepeg, along the north shore of Lake Superior, Chrysler proved that if soundly designed and properly equipped, even a Pentastar Panzer will be a competitive rally car..

The rally was annual from 1961 through 1968, then Shell ended it's participation. A similar rally was held again in 1971, 1994, 95, and last in 1997. In 2009, Napa had a 500 mile rally.

That 1st rally even had a V12 Rolls Royce, and it weighed 7000 pounds

the Fairlane GT a Go Go, by Gene Winfield! 1966 Chicago Auto Show

Ford Fairlane “GT A Go Go ” on display at the 1966 Chicago Auto Show. It was a tastefully modified two-door hardtop designed by the Corporate Projects Studio and built in California by customizer Gene Winfield.

The unique exhaust system on the 390 V-8 engine allowed for street or track driving. During competition, the driver switched a cutout sending the exhaust through tuned straight pipes with outlets in the rocker panel molding, ahead of the rear wheels.

Finished in a white metallic paint, the body was accented by blue racing stripes that ran the full length of the hood, roof and trunk lid.

Notice the small Tigers above the Fairlane badge... representing GTO tigers beaten at races? Is that the Playboy bunny between the tigers?

Very few cars ever had racing stripes offset to one side... and since there are so few Rambler American cars left, I've never seen one in person with the stripe
