Colorado company Lunar Outpost announced today (Nov. 21) that it has chosen Starship to launch its new moon rover, known as Eagle, and land the wheeled vehicle on the lunar surface.




Lunar Outpost is working with Leidos, MDA Space, Goodyear and General Motors on Eagle. 

This "Lunar Dawn" team is one of three private groups that NASA picked this past April to develop a version of the Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), the rover that the agency's Artemis astronauts will drive on the moon beginning in 2030 or so.

The other two teams are led by Intuitive Machines and Venturi Astrolab. That latter company also selected Starship to launch its LTV rover, known as FLEX ("Flexible Logistics and Exploration").

And NASA picked Starship to be Artemis' first crewed lander; it's currently scheduled to deliver agency astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time on the Artemis 3 mission, in late 2026.

the lunar rover at the moon's south pole hasn't found ice yet, but it has found sulfur, aluminum, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen. No hydrogen though

Sulfur is of particular interest based on research that indicates it could be used to make concrete, rather than relying on Portland Cement, whose ingredients are likely to be less accessible.


When quantities of Portland cement were first imported to the United States in the 1880s, its principal use was in the construction of sidewalks. Its name is derived from its similarity to Portland stone which was quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. It was named by Joseph Aspdin who obtained a patent for it in 1824.

Portland cement is one of the lowest-cost materials widely used over the last century. Concrete produced from Portland cement is one of the world's most versatile construction materials.

Portland cement had been imported into the United States, and in the 1870s, it was being produced near Kalamazoo, Michigan.

By the early 20th century, American-made Portland cement had displaced most of the imported Portland cement.

India has joined 3 other countries in achieving a lunar landing and plans to use a robot rover to examine the lunar south pole for ice




the Vikram Lander touched down in search of frozen water on the Chandrayaan-3 mission. 

 The successful landing means India joins the countries to reach the Moon after the former Soviet Union, the US and China

Russia attempted a south pole landing, after 50 years of not trying for solar system interaction, but crashed their equipment, earlier this month. It was a surprise in light of the continuously successful international space station missions. 

India’s lander carried a solar-powered rover, Pragyaan, which will explore the south pole and send data back to Earth over the next fortnight as it searches for ice.

If this proves possible to extract, it could be converted into drinking water or oxygen for astronauts, or broken down to provide rocket fuel.

India, which has firmly established itself in the latest space race, previously discovered water molecules and an atmosphere on the Moon in 2008.

One aspect of the event is a problem though, there has been no communication yet between orbiter and lander. 

Indications that there might be a problem with the landing began once Vikram reached an altitude of 1.3 mile from the lunar surface. At this point, the lander began to deviate from its intended trajectory, which was followed by a loss of communications just as mission controllers expected to receive touchdown confirmation.

However, even if contact cannot be restored with the lander, the mission is hardly a write-off. The Chandrayaan-2 orbiter is still operational and will remain in orbit around the Moon for the next seven years. Carrying on in the tradition of its predecessor, it will study the lunar surface using its suite of eight scientific instruments and the data will inform future ISRO missions.

From 1958 to 2019, 109 moon missions were launched out of which 61 were successful and 48 were not. This indicates about 60% success rate for lunar missions launched by countries around the world.

interesting aspect to the lunar rover's range...

no matter how far it could travel with however many batteries, and however much charge they held, the limit to how far it could travel was the ability of the astronauts to walk back to the lunar lander if it broke down.

So it's the only vehicle made that is limited by the people it carries around, and how far they can walk.

 The above is the Land Speed Racing record holder of 1970, the Blue Flame, which was running on hydrogen peroxide and liquid natural gas. It's on permanent display at the Sinsheim Technik Museum in Germany. It was contructed in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and that record stood for 13 years

prototype lunar rover... the MTA


This is Frenc Pavlics (the mobility genius) driving the MTA over our “Lunarium” rock field outside of the engineering building. It is controlled with a joystick controller on the right side.
