The Patent was filed on June 7th, 1982 and Granted on Oct. 30th, 1984 and the assignee was the Wright Tool and Forge Company in Barberton ,Ohio

Two 15-year-old twins, Willy and Arthur Gonzales, and their brother Eddy, built the Gonzales Tractor Biplane in San Francisco between 1912 and 1913 (tractor biplane was a common term in that early era, it meant the engine was a puller)

Arthur and Willy had begun their venture first with kites, which grew ever larger at the home their grandmother purchased in the Richmond District in the wake of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire at 435 16th Avenue in San Francisco.


The brothers learned to fly using kite-type gliders that they launched from sand dunes near their home in San Francisco’s Richmond District. 

At her home, there were sand dunes in the back yard area near the ocean. From 1908 to 1910, their large kites became gliders, the kind you could ride into the sky with one of the boys aboard and people assisting in the flights holding ropes.


By 1909, the two boys began work on the aircraft known as Gonzales No. 1 Tractor Bi-plane, the craft they planned for motorized flight. Each step was carefully planned as they designed using paper, pencils and possible designs, and built their aeroplane. 

Construction took two years. The two boys designed the airframe without an engine using photographs and by observing the aeroplanes flying overhead.

In true bicycle shop fashion, all of the wing support wires are attached with bicycle wire and spoke adjusters.



In 1914 their Grandmother agreed to buy them the engine they needed and the propeller to go with it. Finding an engine suitable to power their aeroplane, required a long search. Finally, they found one which was well-designed from Kemp Machine Works Aeroplane Motors, located in Muncie, Indiana.

It was originally covered with fabric, but Gonzales and the museum are keeping the fabric off so visitors can see the skeleton of hand-carved wood and get an idea of what it took to design and put the biplane together.

San Francisco made one of its first noise ordinances because the Gonzalez plane engine was too loud, and prohibited flying machines from operating in city limits, prompting the brothers to crate the aircraft, load it onto a train flatcar and take it near Woodland and the present site of Travis Air Force Base where they would camp out while working on and flying the aircraft. 


The length of any stay hinged on when they ran out of something essential, keeping in mind the schedule for an available train heading to SF. 

When the time had come, the boxes would be packed up and carried to the railroad platform. This was about a half-block. Then, sitting on their cargo, they would wait to flag down the train, knowing full well they would hear the conductor say loudly, “Here are those crazy Gonzales boys again”.

This statement was first voiced by their brother, Eddie, who was also the first pilot to fly the Gonzales No. 1. One of the Wright Brothers visited Willy and Arthur about this time to examine Gonzales No. 1 to ensure there were infringements on their patent. None were found. 

The brothers later tried running a flying school and aircraft manufacturing business out of the ground floor of their home, but it’s unknown if they ever had a student or sold an engine, Gonzales said.

The brothers moved to Los Angeles in 1915, and took the biplane with them. It ended up in the basement of Bob Gonzales’ grandmother along with everything else the brothers saved.

The shaft the propeller was on, rotates, the sole curved propeller' bite into the air pulling the aircraft had to outdo the Wright Brothers double-propeller pusher bi-plane. The Gonzales No. 1 Tractor Bi-plane was among the first to ever do so with competitors such as Curtiss. At this point in time, before 1914 worldwide, there were only a couple hundred aircraft in existence.

there was a merger between the Glenn Martin Company, the Wright Company, the Simplex Automobile Co, and the General Aeronautical Corp.... and then they rolled out the Wright-Martin Model R powered by a 150hp Hall-Scott A-5A.



Indian Model O light weight twin bike strapped tight between the wings. The US. Navy and Martin -with the US. Army as observers- tested this contraption as a way to give its crew an escape option in case they had to land behind enemy lines


The theorized advantages of having new, lightweight motorcycles available to pilots along the front were numerous.

 A motorcycle provided pilots with a solution for forced emergency landings. Either due to mechanical or combat failure, often times pilots had to land their aircraft in remote locations far from any available fuel or assistance, but with another vehicle they could quickly escape any dangerous environments or simply retrieve whatever they needed to get back in the air.

In the case of a pilot who survived an aerial attack, the ability to return to friendly territory was another attractive incentive despite the added weight of a motorcycle. 

With the life expectancy of a WWI pilot being only around 20 days near the front, having a pilot return from battle rather than wind up a POW or casualty was particularly of interest.

ever heard of Grover Bergdoll? A bon vivant draft dodger who drove fast cars and buzzed his neighbors in his 2 seater 1911 Wright Brothers model B plane, (the most intact original Wright airplane remaining in the world) and was known as the Playboy of the Eastern Seaboard.




He refused to fight in the First World War and, in a case that gripped the nation, was imprisoned for it in the early 1920s, but he escaped after only a few weeks and left for his ancestral land of Germany, set up housekeeping and the U.S. government seized the assets he left behind. 

The Philadelphia's Franklin Institute museum claimed Bergdoll transferred the plane to them by letter in 1933. It's since changed its story and said the agreement was verbal.

According to the New York Times, it has recently admitted there is no such letter and that it was a "verbal" agreement with Bergdoll that landed the intensely historic artifact in the museum.

"Getting a verbal agreement—how was it possible when my father was a fugitive at the time in Germany?" Katharina wondered aloud to the Times. "You could not have reached him," adding that since the government technically owned the plane at the time, he could not have legally transferred it. Bergdoll eventually got most of his stuff back after he had returned to the U.S. in the 1940s and served a four-year prison sentence for his youthful transgressions.

The plane stayed at the museum. Katharina and her family either want the plane back or compensation for it and they'd also like the museum to come clean about how they obtained it.

The museum told the Times in a statement this is the first time anyone has questioned its claim to the plane. "At no time between 1935 and Mr. Bergdoll's death in 1966 did he, his mother, Emma, or his wife, Berta, ever claim any right to the airplane, dispute the validity of the gift, or request its return," the museum's statement to the Times said.

Bergdoll was born in Philadelphia to a wealthy family, owners of the City Park Brewery (cold brewed lager) and the Bergdoll Mansion.

From racing cars around Fairmount Park to building a roller coaster at their Brewerytown estate, the five children of Louis Bergdoll, Jr. and Emma Barth Bergdoll were constant fodder for the press and provided a rapt public with snapshots of the alluring lives of Philadelphia’s privileged class.

At age 17, in 1910 he acquired a Bleriot XI and learned to fly 

2 years later, he was one of 119 people to train at the Wright Flying School, and in 1912 he purchased a Wright Model B biplane for $5,000.

Bergdoll made several public flights from an airfield on family-owned land outside Philadelphia, and was the first person to fly an airplane between Philadelphia and Atlantic City, New Jersey.  

At the controls of this plane, Grover “terrorized the Philadelphia community . . . dive-bombing roof tops, racing locomotives, and chasing frightened bathers down the beaches of Atlantic City"


in 1914 he raced at Brighton beach and Trenton. In October he crashed again this time driving the Erwin headlong into an oncoming vehicle. He then hit a tree before going through a hedge and turning over, where upon it caught fire. Both Grover and his passenger escaped

Although Bergdoll registered for the draft, he skipped a physical and was declared a deserter in 1918 (as he never enlisted, he was actually guilty of evading Article 58 of the Selective Service Act of 1917), most likely becuase his family was from Germany, he eluded police for two years, and was arrested at his home in January 1920. 

While as many as 160,000 young men ultimately would evade conscription, Bergdoll’s wealth and German heritage made him stand out as a “draft dodger.” When his mother offered the head of the local draft board $1,000 if he would exempt her son from the draft, the situation only got worse for Grover.

After he was found guilty of desertion at a court-martial at Fort Jay on Governors Island in New York City, he was sentenced to five years in prison.

Five months later, military authorities allowed Grover to be released under guard to recover a cache of gold he claimed to have buried near Hagerstown, Maryland. 

During a stop at his Philadelphia home, he escaped with his chauffeur. Despite a nationwide manhunt, the duo managed to cross the border into Canada and sail to Germany, ultimately finding refuge in Eberbach at a hotel owned by Bergdoll's uncle. Warren G. Harding ordered the seizure of Bergdoll's assets, worth between $500,000 and 800,000 under the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917

The US Army tried to kidnap him, in Germany, twice, and failed. 

Eventually, 80 percent of the property confiscated in 1921 was restored to him.


The United States Against Bergdoll is the true story of the government's relentless pursuit of Bergdoll across two continents for two decades, of the confiscation of his entire fortune, and of it dictatorial attempt to exile him permanently from his native America.

He never was inducted into the Army, but the govt wanted to make a really high profile example of someone, and being of rich German parents, he was a prime target, and the govt lied about legal technicalities to get him in prison. His brother spent just under 3 years in Leavenworth. 



two Bergdoll racers entered in the 1911 Fairmont Park Race. One was abandoned by Grover Bergdoll at a farm in Port Penn, Delaware, in 1919. Discovered in 1949, it is still in its original condition.

Once Charles Rolls discovered flying, he ditched his love for cars saying that up in the air there is no police to curb your joy.


Even before the famous meeting in 1904, the name Charles Stewart Rolls would have been known to Henry Royce thanks to his exploits at the wheel and reputation as a skilled motor racer. He held the unofficial land speed record in 1903 piloting his 80hp Mors to nearly 83 mph along the course in the Duke of Portland's Clipstone Park.

In his first race in France in 1899 – the Paris to Boulogne – Rolls had finished fourth in the tourist class, driving an 8hp Panhard and Levassor. In 1903 he competed in the fateful Paris to Madrid town-to-town, an event in which thirty-four drivers and spectators were to perish.

Rolls was a pioneer aviator and initially, balloonist, making over 170 balloon ascents. In 1903 he won the Gordon Bennett Gold Medal for the longest single flight time.

Following the formation of Rolls-Royce, Rolls turned his attention to the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. After frustration in 1905, Rolls returned in 1906 winning in a Rolls-Royce Light Twenty.

By 1907 Rolls' interest turned increasingly to flying and he tried to persuade Royce to design an aero engine. He became the second Briton to go up in an airplane, and it was piloted by Wilbur Wright!

Their flight on lasted four minutes and twenty seconds.





He bought one of six Wright Flyer aircraft built by Short Brothers under license from the Wright Brothers and from early October 1909 made more than 200 flights. 

by 1909 Rolls' interest in the car business he made with Royce in 1904 was waning, and at the end of the year he resigned as Technical managing director and became a non-executive director.

He co-founded the ballooning club that became the Royal Aero Club in 1901, and in March 1910 he was the second person they licensed to fly an aeroplane. 

He became the first man to make a non-stop double crossing of the English Channel by plane in June 1910. In July, he died in a plane crash, age 32

the 40 acres in Maryland known as College Park Airport, began construction much the same as any other small airport of its size, except how it came to be... it's design and build were oversaw in 1909 by Wilbur Wright,


After four years of courting, negotiating, building, and testing, the U.S. Army agreed to purchase a Wright airplane in August 1909. An addition to selling the machine, the Wrights also had to train 2 U.S. Army officers to fly it, and an appropriate airfield to do that, and as they were pioneering airplanes, and pilot training, they got to design what airfield should be like.

While awaiting improvements to the airfield, and with Orville off to Europe with sister Katharine, Wilbur made news in New York with another Wright plane. As part of the Hudson-Fulton celebration at the end of September, he made headlines in that populous city with awe-inspiring flights down the Hudson River and around the Statue of Liberty that a million New Yorkers witnessed. The tremendous crowds that lined the Jersey shores of the river, as well as those watching from the assembled battleships over which he flew, gave him a tremendous ovation for his flights.



Once the training began, Wright and the two lieutenants stayed at private homes across the railroad tracks in the town of College Park. 

The first order of business, once everyone was settled, was to assemble the biplane, which Wilbur did for his students then adjusting the engine, unpacking crates, and putting together the forward and rear sections of the airplane.

That evening, Wilbur asked Lt. Lahm if he wanted his first lesson in cranking the engine. Lahm, was given this honor because he was in charge of the military detachment at the field. After about eight attempts, the engine sputtered to life to the delight of all those who witnessed it. 

As they packed up for the day, Wilbur remarked to the newsmen (who were always standing by ready to record every comment and facial expression of the famous aviator), that he would have loved to take the airplane out for a flight. "This is an ideal day for flying", he said. "I would give $100 a day if I could have this kind of weather for flying."

There was a great deal of excitement in the air the following day, with crowds of people arriving throughout the day in carriages and automobiles. Brig. Gen. James Allen, Chief of the Signal Corps and Major Squier arrived for the first time to inspect the airfield and were pleased with the improvements that had been made. They spent a great deal of time talking about the possibility of holding the 1910 International Air Meet at College Park, a topic that had dominated the news for the past few months.

However, it had recently come to the attention of the Baltimore & Washington Aero Clubs--who were making this recommendation--that College Park was a dry town. If this was to stand in the way of the movement they might have to get the state legislature to "wet it down" for the occasion!

Among the visitors, was the Chinese Prime Minister, Wu Ting Fang and his wife, who had arrived at the field in an automobile along with his bodyguard around midday, to witness two of the flights. The Associated Press in many reports of the day related that the Chinese diplomat was extremely curious, and amazed as the internal combustion engine was explained to him and inquiring particularly as to where the fire was. He asked Lt. Humphreys whether he could fly to New York, and ventured the opinion that the machine did not fly high enough, and that it made too much noise. At the conclusion of the flights he warmly congratulated Mr. Wright. "When you get it finally perfected, bring it to China," said Mr. Wu.

Ohio's new license plate design passed through a lot of approvals and reviews, but no one was smart enough to know the critical fact about the very aircraft they were purporting to be proud of as a state, that the design of the Wright Brothers craft LOOKS opposite modern planes, and the banner on their license plate isn't trailing the aircraft

 

Just exactly uneducated, but proud, can the bureaucrats be, when they know nothing of the Wright Brothers aircraft design? 

(Bragging moment, I found out when working through my family tree, that I'm distantly related to the Wright family )

The mistake has also reignited one of America's longest running debates: Who can claim credit for the Wright brothers' first flight?

Ohio and North Carolina have long been at odds over which state gets to lay claim on the brothers' achievement. Ohio claims that, as the pair originally hailed from the state and the plane they completed their 39-second flight in was built in Dayton, it should get the credit

But the flight itself actually took place at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, And the North Carolinian newspaper, the Charlotte Observer, joked: "Let's talk about which state Kitty Hawk is in."

for historical accuracy, Ohio is fraudulently self promoting a lie. The wright Brothers were years behind the accomplishments of Gustave Whitehead in Ct, who accomplished flight 2 years prior, but didn't have friends in high places, and a deal worked out with the Smithsonian. Frankly, they were geniuses at self promotion too.

Farnum Fish, 16 years old with wealthy parents (they bought him a $5000 dollar airplane in 1911) set the record for flying over water in 1912, here he is at a flying exhibition at the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. He was, at the age of 15, the "youngest licensed aviator in the world"

With his parents bankrolling his every wish, the 16-year-old, California-born Farnun Fish learned to fly at the Wright Aviation School in Dayton, Ohio. 

Then, they bought him a $5,000 Wright Flyer Model B and he went on the exhibition circuit.

In February 1912, he participated in a pilots meet at Emeryville Race Track, in California, where he carried the first airmail to Oakland.

Next he attended a small meet in April at the Coronado Polo Grounds in San Diego, where he angered Glenn Curtiss when he landed without invitation on Curtiss's airfield

He was the first to carry newspapers, and at the time, that was a big deal, as it was far faster than the train for circulation of news.

On May 17, 1912, Fish was arrested "after landing with a woman passenger in Grant Park" in Chicago.

He avoided a fine by claiming engine trouble.

Imagine how damn awesome it would be for your sex life, to be 16, with your own airplane, your parents bankroll, and celebrity status.

In these photos, Fish had recently completed a promotional flight from Chicago to Milwaukee that was the record for over-water flight. This close-up offers an excellent view of the manner in which the early Wright planes were controlled.

But his youthful life of adventure didn't end with fairground exhibitions... no, it was getting shot while flying recon for Pancho Villa, I shit you not. 

On May 15, 1915, Fish was flying reconnaissance for Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution. While 500 feet over a large body of soldiers, he was shot at; one bullet entered his calf, passed through his thigh and ended up in his shoulder.

 He managed to return to his base before crashing in his bullet-ridden aircraft, making him, according to Dr. John H. Lienhard, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and History at the University of Houston, "the first airplane casualty in the history of aerial warfare."

The Wright Brothers, operating on a showstring budget to invent the airplane, without any engineering to build on, had to invent the engineering, the test cell wind tunnel, and the principles and mathmatics of lift, and all sort of other stuff with what was available in the bike shop.

They built a wind tunnel, the second in America. (The first was built by Alfred Zahm.) Over the winter of 1901-1902, they tested over 200 wing shapes to find the most promising, then thoroughly investigated about 45 shapes to determine the very best. Otto Lilienthal,1848–1896, a glider pioneer whose lifetime study of flight, gliding, and birds, was a big influence on the Wright brothers,


A German engineer who began his aeronautical research in 1871 by studying bird flight. After nearly two decades of imaginative experimentation and research, he produced the best and most complete body of aerodynamic data up to that time. He published his results in Der Vogelflug als Grundlage der Fliegekunst (Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation) in 1889. 

Following his program of data collection, Lilienthal constructed and tested a series of elegant, full-size gliders. Between 1891 and 1896 he made nearly 2,000 brief flights in 16 different glider designs based on his aerodynamic research.

An abrupt and tragic end, while flying one of his monoplane gliders, Lilienthal stalled and crashed (Aug 1896).

During a lucid moment, he spoke his last words to his brother, who had rushed to be by his side. His words translate to “Sacrifices must be made.”

 The Wright brothers later cited his death as the point when their serious interest in flight research began, and named Lilienthal as their inspiration.
