Wally Booth, raced a '69 Super Bee for Detroit Dodge dealers, built engines for Edelbrock alongside Grumpy Jenkins, and pulled 900 Hp out of a 360 at 9k by sectioning heads, using 4 heads to make 2 with bigger ports and improved flow
there's a good article at Motor Trend, reprinted from a 2015 article from Elapsed Times magazine, and it chronicles Booth's racing history, and AMC's efforts to remain competitive (Super Stock Hurst AMX's for example, Shirley Shahan driving, trying to get Dyno Don to move over from Ford, etc)
Booths incredible drive to excel at drag racing resulted in his Hornet, of all things, beating Jack ROUSH of all drivers, in the Pro Stock final at the NHRA Gatornationals, 8.97 to 9.01 in March of 74
Booth won 5 national events, the 74 Gatornats, and in 1976, the US Nats, Sping Fall and WinterNats,

Dyno Don, 1961 Super Stock Impala
Of the 491,000 Chevy Impalas built for 1961, only 142 were fitted with the 409 cubic inch engine.
These engines were rated at 360 HP and had a single four-barrel carburetor. Some racers purchased the engines seperately and installed them in 2-door Biscayne sedans. (when's the last time you heard of a Biscayne?)
This was permitted in 1961, factory installations were not required.
Two racers that went to this trouble in 1961 were established drag racers Frank Saunders out of Phoenix, Arizona and Dave Strickler from York, PA.
Frank Saunders won the S/S class at the 1961 NHRA Winternationals while Don Nicholson took the win in the Stock Eliminator category at the same event.

spectating on top of a T Bird, with a lawn chairs and an umbrella, and a lawn chair on the hood... that's going to leave a mark... huh. Never seen anyone set up chairs on top of a car before
there are 5 people sitting on the roof of that car... they made cars strong back then
