I owned an authentic 1969 Ford Cobra ( Torino) 428 SCJ motor, modified as most teenaged cars of the times were. But, as you look closer at the attached pictures, the interior has been modified extensively as well.

In the early 70's I was a carpenter and helped friends with custom van interiors. Paneling was very popular in these custom vans. Some how I came up with idea I could lower weight by removing the rear seat and a little structure. 

Ultimately, a flat deck was constructed with paneling and being a fastback, the back window turned out to be quite nice to view stars with my girlfriend. :) Car ran high 11's in the 1/4 mile. Note, your favorite wheels of the day also :)  (slotted mags!) (Really shiny too!)

NASCAR driver Buddy Arrington, from Martinsville, Virginia, was driving a light blue 1969 Ford Cobra when he was boxed-in by police and arrested in Virginia. 

The arrest was made on Saturday December 4, 1971 at 4:10pm with $4,000 (equal to $25,000 today) worth of illegal moonshine in the trunk and back seat.

Buddy, who normally races Mopar Hemis, was bootlegging in a Ford Cobra. It was reported that the factory 428 Cobra Jet engine had been replaced with a 429ci engine. Supposedly it was specially modified to run over 180mph and featured eleven extra springs and air shocks to handle the 2,000 pounds payload.

Officer Brown from Henry County and officer Parrish from Pittsylvania County were sitting at the county line near the corner of Rt58 and Pinewood when the blue Cobra, heading East, got their attention. 

With the officers in pursuit, Arrington and his wife continued down RT58 at a high rate of speed for 1.2 miles before turning South on RT 855. Officer Brown did not follow Arrington and instead continued down Route 58 to head Buddy off on Route 622.

"Wasn't no high-speed chase," says the arresting deputy, Melvin Brown, "I blocked the road, and Buddy was real polite in stopping. Buddy's a likeable fella, and I got nothing against him. 'Shine was a way of life back then. Heck before he died my dad made the stuff."

"Way he blocked the road, weren't but one thing to do and that was to hit him and probably kill him," Buddy Arrington says. "I had too much invested to be doing that. Anyway, he had his little kid with him, 7 years old. If he's gonna catch me for running 'shine, he shouldn't have no kid with him, I ain't never hurt nobody."

"If I hadn't been with Buddy that day," says his wife, Patsy, "that deputy never would have caught him. He wouldn't have known which way Buddy went."

Buddy was let go on a $500 bond.

Before the new generation Torino came out in 1970, the Ford Dealers Association in Oregon got together with an idea to promote the new body style. The special Torino would be unique to the Northwest, and 601 were to be produced, but only 395 were made

Available in three colors, this one is Pacific Blue with a black hood, dual chrome hood-lock pins, dual racing mirrors, rocker panel racing stripes and argent-styled wheels.

Of the 395 Type N/W models made, only five are 429s and only one is a 429 Cobra Jet.

When the Oregon Ford Dealers Association saw the new Torino, they got excited and decided to repeat the “California Special” magic that had worked so well for the Mustang. With that, the Torino Type NorthWest (N/W) was born.

Every Type N/W came with matte black hood and locking pins, body-color sports mirrors, argent-styled road wheels with trim rings, Wide Oval tires, and rocker panel graphics with “Type N/W” on the rear quarter panel. It was a package car to some degree. Only three colors were offered: Pacific Blue, Washington Green and Oregon Orange. These were Grabber colors with special names.

It seems that one person was smart to record it off Speedvision, as this commercial is said to have only been broadcast once in 1969, and that was immediately stopped by someone who didn't want the legal problems of fighting Chrysler, or Warner Brothers, for using the trademarked "Meep Meep" sound

David Pearson's one of one Cobra Torino

In 1969, David Pearson drove Holman Moody’s No. 17 Ford Torino to a second NASCAR Grand National championship in a row.

Ford Motor Company and Holman Moody worked together to prepare the special one-of-a-kind 1969 Torino Cobra as Pearson’s reward for winning back-to-back NASCAR Grand National championships.

Under the hood was a 428ci Cobra Jet V-8 backed by an automatic transmission. The Torino was originally built with 3.70 rear gears, which Pearson changed to 3.10s for highway driving. The interior was fitted with bucket seats and a column shift.

Ford’s Lorain, Ohio, assembly plant built the Torino Cobra and applied the special blue metallic paint. It was then shipped to Holman Moody, where gold paint was sprayed to the upper portion of the car and a spoiler was mounted on the trunk lid. The shiny aluminum spoiler was not a random part from inventory or pulled from a parts bin; it was an actual spoiler from the No. 17 Holman Moody Torino race car Pearson piloted.
