The car graveyard was a popular attraction, so when the authorities decides the junkyard should be cleared, people protested enough for it to live on, so to speak. It was environmentally secured (oil, batteries) and remains a great place to visit. I've been there half a dozen times, checking out the rusted hulks of cars from my childhood.
