The airport was constructed in the infield of the old Atlanta Speedway racetrack where the first professional motorcycle race in the state was held in 1909. The track had fallen into disrepair by the 1920s and in 1925 was sold to the city for use as Atlanta's first airport, today it is the site of the Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
