That an interesting find. It 'might' be a badly painted umbrella which indicated a top cover mission, or possibly an umbrella with a bomb symbolizing top cover and a bombing mission. But I'm doubtful because this is relatively early in the war, and this model of P-51 didn't perform well at higher altitude. This has got me bugged, so I'm going to keep looking.

You could be right about it being a hammer. Unfortunately for us there are a lot of unique markings that were in house and their meaning is lost to time. Sometimes they depict an incident with that particular aircraft. At Ramstein AB we had an F4E with a kill marking for another F4. During a stateside live fire exercise the pilot of this F4 shot down his own wingman, who got himself between the done they were shooting at and the AIM 9 they'd fired.
