Japanese traveler Ryo Murata is cycling from Chicago to Los Angeles along historic Route 66, sharing a message of happiness and perseverance as the "Mother Road" celebrates its 100th anniversary.
Murata hopes to reach Santa Monica on Nov. 11, his birthday and the date Route 66 was established in 1926. The symbolic finish is an important part of his journey as the highway marks its centennial in 2026.
Along the way, Murata is recording his experiences for a documentary he plans to produce himself. He is also writing a book about the people he has met, the lessons he has learned and how travel has changed his outlook on life.
Murata shares updates from the road on Instagram and Tiktok under the name @human__revo.
