“Sherman neckties” were rails heated, and bent, during General Sherman’s destructive march from Atlanta, to the Atlantic Ocean in 1864. The object being to deny Confederate forces use of what meager railroad they had.

    1. you are welcome! I'd heard of Sherman's March to the sea, his soldiers destroying everything in his wake, foraging for supplies as they knew they left their supply lines behind... the most notorious military action until the atomic bomb, the way I heard it.
      And I've heard of and posted about the train tracks being the supply system both sides relied on, and how both sides were trying to destroy the tracks so the other couldn't use them. I've posted about that, and a couple of the trains involved.
