After approximately 75 years of burial under in sand, a150 year old steam engine (1876) was unearthed in New Zealand's South Mole dunes, still on the rails. 1 of 3 Mills A locos built for the Wanganui to Foxton railway.

The 3 locomotives were named Skunk, Opossum, and Wallaby

  1. I wondered if the locomotive was accidentally buried by a sand dune but I discovered that the South Mole is a man-made breakwater constructed to protect the Wanganui River where it enters the sea, and apparently the railroad was old enough that it had as much value as backfill as it would salvage. I probably wouldn't have written this comment except that I just like to say 'Wanganui" as often as I can.

    1. Lol, well, you added more info to the reason the train was buried in sand than anything I found online! Thank you! I suspected that was the reason, but there's nothing written in what I read about it to verify that.
