grumpy old man who hates yuppies making Harleys crazy loud, wrote a really long article about it ("some of them wanted everyone to know their mufflers are broken")

"full disclosure, I do know a little about generating noise. I have an electric wood chipper that can scare off crows and terrify small pets. But I don’t fire it up unless somebody goes first with their leafblower. And I certainly don’t go riding it up and down the street to show off."

"if you need to wallow in the noise, rent Climate Pledge Arena and do it indoors the way nature intended. Instead of forcing your noise on people who just want to get home without feeling like they’re being buzzed by the Blue Angels."

  1. Here in Wisconsin, home of the Harley, they have a saying, "Loud pipes save lives". They don't know much about physics around here, I guess.

And if the loud pipes weren't bad enough, they for some reason want to listen to music when they ride around. So, they install a crazy loud stereo system that is blasted louder than the loud exhaust.
When I used to ride a bike it was about wind in the hair, the freedom of the open road, and getting away from it all. Now it seems to be about being as obnoxious as possible.

  2. As much as I dislike the noise of motorcycles, I find that it protects these men and women because that may not be seen but they WILLBE HEARD. Believe men, when I am working at my computer, my work involves listening to people. I have to stop for the time it takes when a motorcycle roars past. Yet I know that this noise is beneficial to the safety of the cyclists.

  3. "Beneficial to the safety of the cyclists"? I don't think so when motorists irritated with the last jerk blasting around sans mufflers are ticked off so much that they decide to crowd me off the road.
"Loud pipes save lives" - yeah I've been hearing this long enough. Why do ambulances have mufflers? If you really think your straight pipes are doing any good in traffic why aren't they pointed forward?
The fact is loud pipes lose rights! Look at all the (unconstitutional?) laws barring motorcycles from various parks and communities due to a few child-like riders who think attention grabbing noise is all important.
I like riding my motorcycles and get very irritated by people who think they're thumbing their nose at "The Man" by making unnecessary noise, thus endangering my chosen form of motorsport.
