A part-time Massachusetts police officer lied when he said somebody shot at his patrol car, causing it to crash and catch fire, a police sergeant said Thursday.
"We have determined that the officer's story was fabricated," said Mills, Massachusetts, police Sgt. William Dwyer. "Specifically that he fired shots at his own cruiser as part of a plan to concoct a story that he was fired upon."

In June, a Houston police officer claimed he was ambushed and shot in the back during a traffic stop for simply “doing his job.” The media jumped on the story, blaming Black Lives Matter protests against police for creating a “war on cops” that would enable crimes on police officers. The problem is, it now appears as if the cop was shot by his fellow officer.
Both officers would go on to claim that they saw a champagne-colored Buick, that was believed to have been in an accident with a white jeep moments before, pull into the parking lot prior to the shooting.
HPD is working on the theory that Officer Smith may have been hit by gunfire from his friend at the scene, METRO Police Officer Gregory Hudson. METRO confirms Hudson was placed on desk duty on September 2. The agency says the move was made after HPD investigators began requesting information, including firearms records from METRO.
Smith was not wearing his bulletproof vest as is required by department policy.
