The Boss 429 Mustang is a great source for those who delight in the intricacies of small but significant differences in the mechanical details between the batches, especially the 1969 cars. Additionally, as well as Kundsen’s pre-production test-bed there were two with the C6 automatic, part of a run of seven (the other five 428 CobraJets) built for the “1970 Military Performance Tour”, a program run in response to the alarming finding the casualty toll among soldiers buying muscle cars after returning from tours of duty in Vietnam was close to the rate of battlefield losses.
There was even a “proof of concept” mid-engined Boss 429 Mustang which Ford listed as the “LID (Low-Investment Drive-train) project”, an allusion to things being done “on the cheap”, using as many off-the-shelf components as possible. Also air-conditioned and an automatic, the gearbox was in front of the engine with the differential behind, the same arrangement which two years later Lamborghini would display when the prototype Countach LP500 made its debut at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Apparently, it worked quite well.
