Walmgate Bar: York’s last barbican

These oak doors and arches have guarded York for centuries

Walmgate Bar is the city’s most complete medieval gateway and the only one to keep its barbican, portcullis and inner timber doors.

Look closely: the inner stone arch is 12th century, the barbican 14th, the doors 15th, and the timber-framed house on the inner side is Elizabethan from the 1580s.

rebels burned it in 1489, Parliament’s cannon battered it in the 1644 Siege of York, and it was rebuilt by 1648
