Ontario drivers are voicing growing frustration over the widespread use of speed cameras, as a new petition gains momentum in Brampton calling for their removal. There's only 150. Problem? What problem? They are installing 35 more

These cameras disproportionately impact working class individuals

Ontario first authorized the use of ASE cameras in 2017 to improve road safety in school and community zones where speed limits are under 80 km/h.

Speed camera enforcement has been controversial in cities across Ontario. In Toronto, a camera on Parkside Drive was cut down for the sixth time since November, even after another surveillance camera was installed to catch vandals. In Vaughan, the program was paused after it issued over 32,000 tickets in just three weeks.

Some municipalities, like York Region, have brought in over $11.5 million since launching their programs, raising questions about the role of revenue in the use of speed cameras.

Not that anyone questions that the real purpose of the cameras is an unlimited income stream from the working class, to the politicians who need more money to spend on special interest projects, to please campaign donors

  1. Disproportionately affects working class? I'll bet all of those folks getting tickets have a speedometer in the car and can see the speed limit signs.. I have no sympathy for those caught in high traffic areas, subdivisions, school zones, etc... most cameras are in places where residents have complained of reckless speeding.. not the open roads where there is less risk.. usually the "ten over" rule(?) applies here in the US.. so just watch speed and speed limits.. No foul, no ticket.. If ya can't afford the ticket, pay attention and stay close to the posted stuff. If ya get caugght, man up and know that you were not quite doing what you should have been doing at that place and time.
Yes, I do enjoy driving quickly but my buddies and I do that away from other folks as best we can.. We used to do the cafe racer thing early on Sunday mornings running the twistie-curvies along the Mississippi River or some lazy bayou, going two to three times the posted limit at times.. but we don't speed in city limits and we don't do things with the bikes that draw the attention of the police..
My opinion, not necessarily that of the management!

    1. You are correct, and given context, so am I.
The working class, those earning under 100k annual, aren't driving Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. Aren't at the country club, the gold courses, the tennis club, the racquet ball and swim club, the municipal airports, the yacht club, the art galleries, etc. Well, they make up ALL the workers at those establishments, but they are the minority there, not the majority. The golf course has 100 golfers, and a dozen staffers, the parking lot is full of cars detailed, ceramic coated, and the cars that aren't. Ditto the parking lost at the other places,.. and the roads around those places? Don't get speed cameras. Lets say from my experience driving all over San Diego, extensively, for the past 30 years I've lived here.... I can tell you that the cameras get installed by the Walmarts, Targets, and not the municipal airports.
Again, I'm not an expert, just a muppet with a blog. That's why everything I post gets at least one source for the article, and most, liek this one, get 3
