    1. huh! Just hammer them in? Or squeeze them in with channel locks?

  2. Place dimes or quarters in the gaps under full extension to remove, or bend the spring and put coins into the gaps at the outside of the bend, then bend it the other way to put more coins into the other side to hold it extended for installation. After installation closing the hood (or operating the motorcycle centerstand in my case) extends the spring resulting in a shower of coins to try to find.

    1. nice technique! I wish all the old school basics of mechanics were all in a book, an illustrated book, that explained all the tricks, and when and why we used them... how to do a simple fast diagnosis for example, of the alternator, battery, or voltage regulator... stuff like that. How to get unstuck... there must be hundreds of issues that old timers used, from 100 years ago til the 70s, from Model Ts to VW bugs... the old fast method of getting a fan belt off, and on, to a VW engine is a hoot. The RIGHT way to jump start a battery - because there are a couple WRONG ways! I've posted every one over the past 20 years, that I came across or thought of... but they are scattered across 66600 posts
