Ever fall prey to that first cold snap of winter causing your tire pressure sensors to freak you out and make you wonder if a tire got a nail or screw in it?

It gets me every damn year, and take me by surprise. I'd been curious and wondered, and figured it was just the temperature/pressure relationship, and this article confirms it

  1. A co-worker and I were just talking about this. We had to look up where the sensors are located because he didn't believe me that they were wireless.

  3. You betcha! My wife's Honda CRV has tire pressure monitoring not by individual sensors but by relative wheel speed, which I kind of like. It still warns of an actual soft tire, but also warns of a dragging brake or a buildup of ice so bad that it drags (cold snap here!). But you can reset it with a button push, and know that if it doesn't come back, your tires are fine.

My Hyundai sends tire warnings as soon as it gets cold, and my 2007 GMC Truck now seems to have a bad sensor, so its tire warning system has become essentially useless, since it's always on. Needless to say it's not going to get a new set of sensors. I just check the tires from time to time.
