really eye catching VW light truck, victim of the Chicken Tax... I wonder if this is stock length, or is it stretched?

In retrospect, audio tapes from the Johnson White House revealed a quid pro quo unrelated to chicken.

In January 1964, President Johnson attempted to convince United Auto Workers' president Walter Reuther not to initiate a strike just before the 1964 election, and to support the president's civil rights platform.

Reuther, in turn, wanted Johnson to respond to Volkswagen's increased shipments to the United States

  1. It does look stretched but I don't think it is. Comparing it with pictures of others, I see no places where the proportions or the louvers, etc. are different. I think it's just the visual effect of the lowering making it look proportionally longer. I think I mentioned before that I drove one of these (a '66) back in the late 60's for work, and it had a very large flat space in the bed, 9 feet long, as I recall, and was rated for a full ton. The lockable space underneath was a nice touch but it wasn't very well sealed, and leaked.

I would love to have a later (post 68) model of one of these still. But the pre-68 with the swing axle was just about the nastiest, most jouncy, bad-handling, uncomfortable vehicles imaginable.
