it seems every time the price of gas in So Cal stays static for a while, the refinery in El Segundo blows up... it produces about 20% of California's gasoline and 40% of its jet fuel.


This refinery is the largest oil-producing site on the West Coast, and it isn't the first explosion it has seen.

At least four other fires have been reported at the El Segundo facility since 2016. The last one was in 2022

In 2018, a power failure triggered a burn-off at the facility. Black smoke could be seen for miles but there was never a threat to the public.

A year before that in 2017, a fire broke out near the storage tanks at the refinery. That was was put out in about an hour without any injuries.

And in 2016, a fire burned several storage containers at the refinery.

OSHA records show the agency inspected the El Segundo complex 12 times since 2020. Four of those inspections resulted in 14 violations, which totaled $44,000 in OSHA fines. For a facility handling combustible chemicals, the figure is a low number.

It can process nearly 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day
