I wonder too, but I recall that way back when, the school janitor always had some kind of mystery red powder that he pushed ahead of the broom when sweeping the halls, which were tiled with some kind of asphalt tiles. It looked as if it was slightly absorbent and made to put a little sheen on the surface, so perhaps it was sweeping compound!
