1921 Duesenberg Model A, the first passenger Duesenberg sold to the public, and it was delivered to Hawaii. Thus begins a reason to research... which led me to the connection with President Obama

someone screwed up, didn't mention it was Samuel Northrup Castle the grandson of Samuel Northrup Castle the pioneer, and everyone has been copying the error of omission, and buggering up the facts

Samuel Northrup Castle, sugar plantation owner in Hawaii, died in 1894.

the Duesenberg brothers went into passenger car production by setting up a factory in Indianapolis.

Their first customer ordered a car in 1919, but it was not delivered until two years later.

It was the first car sold to the public with the race-inspired innovations of four-wheel hydraulic brakes and an overhead-cam, straight-eight-cylinder engine.

The Bender Body Co. of Cleveland produced its two-seat passenger coach.

As years passed, the Duesenberg eventually became a work truck.

After the original owner’s death in 1959, it passed down to his favorite nephew in California, and then to the nephew’s son, James Christian Castle Jr., and his wife, who discovered the vehicle in a barn, surrounded by horses and farm animals.

“She saw one of the horses eating the leather out of it,” he said. When she and her husband became the owners, they took it to their favorite restoration shop, Canepa, in 2010 to be restored to its original condition.

Samuel Northrup Castle the grandson was born in Honolulu on Feb. 6, 1880. He received an engineering degree from Harvard University in 1901 and did graduate work at Cornell for two years. Once out of school, Castle worked for some major U.S. companies, including Westinghouse and General Electric.

His local career included stints as a director of the Honolulu Advertiser, Halemano Co. and Kohala Sugar Co

  1. I missed the Obama connection. Is there anything else other than the original owners of the car and Obama lived in Hawaii?

    1. I left it out, because, as the title says "research... which led me to the connection with President Obama" and if anyone wanted me to show how a Duesenberg and a President are connected, they'd ask... and only you've asked.
Do you want to enjoy researching it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Northrup_Castle
      the last sentence.
Heck, I enjoy the challenge and hunting of a thing, and that extends to online history research, but if you don't, Obama went to a school, named Clark Hall, in 5th grade, which was on the former property Clark owned, and Clark's grandson bought the Duesenberg.
