When getting a new car, and the consequent insurance, a guy was quoted $4517 a year, Canadian. He was wondering about how to get it cheaper, learned that women pay less, and then asked for a quote if he changed his gender. Bingo, that's the key! The new quote was $3423.
How is this even a thing?
The insurer explained to him that it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender when it comes to basic auto-insurance. When it comes to collision, however, it’s still legal to discriminate against genders on the basis of contrast in driving-statistics.
Further, and here it gets wordy, so grab some caffeine:
it is in fact discrimination against men because the insurance companies are not insuring all men collectively, they are insuring the individual. If you're going to be charged more based on your common traits with others? Then you're being discriminated against for not having traits in common with people that get cheaper insurance rates
Also, poor driving is a behavioral trait, not a biological one.
Moreover, the negative statistics are largely in-part due to men simply driving more.
It’s odd though because Insurance companies already factor in annual mileage. So, clearly, double charging for driving a lot
Nonetheless, men’s rates are significantly higher solely based on what gender they are.
It’s not right that you can drive like a grandpa with a clean clear record, but pay more than that if he were a woman who drives like a maniac.
That is textbook discrimination.
If you aren't convinced that it’s discrimination, think if insurance companies collected stats on race!
If they found that (insert racial location here, Asian, African, European, Pacific Islander, etc) drivers cause more accidents, and charged higher rates based on that, that would be racist.
It would be guaranteed to make the national news and accumulate severe legal action from private parties and governments.
