Fritz Burkard drove his Type 57 Bugatti Atalante from Newport, R.I. all the way to Pebble Beach. Only three 1936/37 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Roll-Top, exist, this one is worth about 20 million dollars +/- 10M. It might just be the most expensive car to drive coast to coast in decades, since Gurney drove his Ferrari Daytona, and the last real Bugatti to drive cross country in longer than that

Classic car collector Fritz Burkhard from Switzerland had the car restored by Sargent Metal Works in Vermont, before picking it up at the Audrain Auto Museum, and then promptly driving the rare classic across America for it to take part in the Pebble Beach Car Week.

Burkard did have a bit more support than most of us would have when making a cross-continent journey.

His mechanic/restorer, and a crew member from the Audrain Automobile Museum supported the journey and documented it on Instagram, helping the Bugatti make the trip, along with going to war against an oil leak.

Burkard and the team from the Audrain Auto Museum in Rhode Island are driving about 300 miles each day.

thank you MB 324 for the focus on Sargent Metalworks

  1. WOW! We must have both spotted this story at the same time as I emailed you a link to that article about the time you posted it. Just a couple of time travelers traveling! Carry On Earthling!

    1. well, Audrain took the credit, but I see on https://sargentmetalworks.com/current-projects you are correct. Probably he took it to Audrain, who took it to Sargent. Thanks for the heads up, please include something to verify your position when correcting other people.
